George Deaver has served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Facilities Operations for almost 27 years at New Jersey City University. He was named Assistant Director of Athletics for JMAC Management on January 9, 1995, just a few short months after the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center opened.
A 1981 graduate of the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, George came to NJCU from his alma mater, where he served as Supervisor of Events and Staff for the athletic department from September 1992 until January 1995. He also oversaw on-site management for Blue Hen football at both home and away games.
From 1982-1989, George was the manager of intercollegiate events at Delaware, supervising events at the Delaware Field House and Delaware Stadium.
Throughout his career, George’s passion towards guidance and mentoring of student workers was paramount. He has impacted the lives of hundreds of student workers throughout his years at NJCU. Many of those student workers continue to return to the JMAC later in life to share their fondest memories of working for George.
Student assistants play a critical role in Athletics and event staffing. They serve as ambassadors for internal and external operations and support all events held by the Department of Athletics & Recreation. Through part-time employment, students build lifelong skills, many relying on their student employment to help cover the cost of their education. This $1,500 award is intended to reward top-performing Athletic Department student assistants who demonstrate excellent service and commitment to Athletic facilities, the Department, and its mission.
The award is provided by the NJCU Foundation through the Athletics Excellence fund to honor Mr. Deaver’s lifelong devotion to the mentorship and development of Athletic Department student workers. It is awarded annually to a student(s) who meet the eligibility criteria and who display an inherent need.
NJCU employees who wish to contribute to the scholarship through payroll deduction are encouraged to sign up here.
